Introduction to the Kalooki 40 Card Game

The Rummy card game of Kalooki 40 is actually just a simple British variation on the Kalooki 51 game elsewhere. There are some slight differences in how the game is played, including how Jokers are handled and when a card can be drawn.

The goal of a game of Kalooki 40 is to be the first player to entirely dispose of all cards in your hand, and this is done in one of two ways:

• Going Kalooki - gradually laying down melds until all cards are disposed of. This can be done through complete melds or "building" on existing melds; or
• Going Out - laying down all cards at a single moment.

For a player to utilize the "Going Kalooki" approach they must wait until a meld has a value of 40 or more before it can be laid on the table, which is where the name of the game comes from. Interestingly, another unique rule to this game is the fact that a player is not allowed to pick up a card from the discard pile without first laying down at least a single meld.
