Introduction to the Oklahoma Gin Card Game

One of the most popular Rummy card game variants is the one known as "Oklahoma Gin". It is a simple variation of the classic Gin Rummy version, with a few alterations that make scoring a playing even more exciting.

The ultimate goal of any game of Oklahoma Gin is to discard all of your cards before the other players at the table. This is done in one of three ways:

  • Going Gin - this is when a player is able to dispose of all cards at a single time without any "deadwood";
  • Knocking - this is when a player has a deadwood score less than or equal to the opening card's face value, and is the first to lay their cards on the table; or
  • Undercutting - when a player has a lower deadwood count than the player who "knocked".

The definition of "deadwood" is all of the cards that cannot be placed into any of the melds that a player is holding. Deadwood cards have point values and will increase the player's score in several ways.
